Why do people start forums like this. Is it for fun, or is there money to be made doing this?

It's both. And sometimes one or the other. Obviously they start a forum because they are interested in a certain topic, and though forums have a low CTR, selling banner spots to private advertisers brings in good money.

Can one forum make you a living, or do you need to have several? Also, are they exensive to run and maintain?

I am a bit curious about this too. I post on a lot of forums, just because I like to sharpen my writing skills and learn a few things in the process. But I would be very interested in hosting a forum or two.
